Fred Aquilino has been involved with photography for more than 35 years, working in various areas of the profession including free lance magazine and news agency photography and even as a color and black and white lab technician in his early years. From that experience, Fred's passion for photography grew into a career that has taken him through the US and to Asia, Africa, Europe and the Far East. Fred studied with Ansel Adams, Morley Baer, George Tice, Olivia Parker, Arthur Ollman, Roy DeCarava, Don Worth and John Sexton. He works in 35mm, medium and large format as well as advanced digital photography. His impressive body of work includes fine art black and white studies with particular focus on architectural, portrait and travel photography. Fred's work in France, Italy, Spain and Asia has resulted in a substantial portfolio with particular emphasis on India, a country that he knows well, having traveled and lived in many parts of the country. In photographic expeditions sponsored by the Indian Government Tourist Office, Fred has documented the life in villages and cities throughout the country and is well known for his work there. In his commercial work, Fred's clients include architects, builders, designers and developers. As the photographer for a leading musical instrument company, Fred's portraits of musicians were exhibited by Fuji Film at the recent PMA conventional in Las Vegas, NV. In India, he has done extensive work for the Taj Hotels and Casino Hotel Group as well s the Indian Government Tourist Office and the tourist offices of the states of Kerala and Gujarat. Fred has been working in digital photography for the past five years and has conducted seminars in digital imaging and Photoshop. Fred's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the country including the Albany Museum of Art in Albany, Georgia, the Sheldon Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute, Indiana, Soho Photo Gallery in New York City and the Renshaw Gallery in McMinnville, Oregon as well as at the Indian Consulate in New York City. Sixteen of Fred's photographs are in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum, and his work has been published in Aperture Magazine. The Times of India (Mumbai Edition) published a feature story on Fred's documentary photography of India, and Newsweek online magazine featured Fred's work to coincide with President Clinton's trip to India, the first by a US president in 20 years. In 1995, Fred's work received first, second and third place awards in the prestigious Ernst Haas photography competition. His work is also in private collections in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. Fred has lectured extensively in New York, Indiana and Oregon. His love of teaching, his patience, knowledge of the history of photography and experience have garnered him a loyal following for the workshops he holds in fine art black and white darkroom at his studio in New York City. |
